I can’t believe it’s already the end of May. I can’t believe you’ve been out of my life for this long. It’s really hard to imagine that I’ve gone on this long without you, even though obviously I have. Not that it was easy. Not that I enjoyed any minute of it. I always think of you at the most random times. I always think of you. And even though I’m over the rough stage, and the pain is less of a burden on my heart, it is still a burden, it still weighs me down. And no matter what I say, or what other people say or think, it’s never going to go away. Even when my wounds have fully healed, there will always be a scar, a permanent reminder of you. And some days I’ll look on that scar with hurt, reminding myself of what it means and how it got there. But other times I’ll look upon it and realize and remember all the love that made it happen. For if I had not loved you, it surely would have faded. But it didn’t and it never will. Because so many good and pure feelings went into it, and that is worthy of a smile, even if it’s a tearful smile.
The Eve 6 concert last Friday was amazing. I wish you could have been there. It was almost as if I could feel your energy there, mingling amongst the music. I though I was going to cry during “Here’s to the Nights.” I physically cannot listen to that song without thinking of you. Of you and me. I sang along as loud as I could, and put all of my energy into that song. I remembered all our nights, all our laughs, all our tears. And although I wanted to cry during it, I could not help but smile. Smile because I was thinking about you, and you can always put a smile on my face. Remember how I used to be unable to look you in the eye with a serious face? How I could never not laugh or smile when I looked at you? I didn’t understand that then. I didn’t know what it meant. I played it off as some young and dumb teenage girl thing. I thought it was stupid and adolescent. But what I now realize is that in truth, I simply could not understand what was happening. I could not comprehend my feelings, so I played them off. It was no lie when I told you that you dazzled me. It was no coincidence that you have been my longest crush ever, the only person I have ever had true feelings for. You were the only guy to ever interest me sexually because you were the only person who could interest and stimulate me emotionally. You were meant for me. You were meant to be my friend, to be in my life. You were meant to make me think, to make me believe, to make me feel. And even if I go the rest of my lifetime without anybody ever making me feel again, I will hold onto our feelings as a way to get me by. I’ll try not to let them hold me back, however; I don’t think you would want me to live in the past or to hold on to such impossibilities. You would want me to live, and to be happy. I know that. And that’s why even now, after everything that happened, I can still find a reason to smile. Because I know that when it comes down to it, you have only wanted the best for me. And sometimes our ideas of what was best differed, and caused problems between us. But now, looking back, I see and I understand. At least I hope I do. I hope that my perceptions are not distorted by my own thoughts and beliefs.
I may not know what I believe in. I may be uncertain of an afterlife, but I hope that wherever you are, whatever you have become, you still feel. And I hope you know. If there is such a thing as a spirit or a soul, I hope you have found peace. I hope that you are happy and comfortable and are finding new adventures. I hope that you know how I feel and are watching over me. I hope that you know that I love you. And if nothing has happened, and you have become nothing, because death means nothing, then I still hope for the same things. I hope that no matter what death means, whether it’s peace, adventure, or an eternity of nothingness, I hope that one day I can see you again. Hold your pale hand in my hand, twirl your hair around my finger, and kiss all along your freckled collarbone. I wish we had some well-wrought urn to keep us immortalized, but we have none of that, no fame. We will never be famous lovers. We will never be anything more than Mike and Sarah. And maybe not even that. One day everyone will forget about us, those that even knew about us at all. But maybe one day we can find each other again, and you can dazzle me, and I’ll tell you pointless, plotless stories. That would be lovely. I fancy meeting you again, mate.
